Product Description:
Is the privatisation of state education defendable? Did the public sector ever provide a fair education for all learners? In Education plc, Stephen Ball provides a comprehensive, analytic and empirical account of the privatisation of education. He questions the kind of future we want for education and what role privatisation and the private sector may have in that future. Using policy sociology to describe and critically analyse changes in policy, policy technologies and policy regimes, he looks at the ethical and democratic impacts of these changes and raises the following questions: Is there a legitimacy for privatisation based on the convergence of interests between business and the ‘third way’ state? Is the extent and value of private participation in public education misunderstood? How is the selling of private company services linked to the remodelling of schools? Why have the technical and political issues of privatisation been considered but ethical issues almost totally neglected? What is happening here, beyond mere technical changes in the form of public service delivery? Is education policy being spoken by new voices? Drawing upon extensive documentary research and interviews with senior executives from the leading education services industry’ companies the author challenges preconceptions about privatisation. He concludes that blanket defence of the public sector as it was, over and against the inroads of privatisation, is untenable, and that there is no going back to a past in which the public sector as a whole worked well and worked fairly in the interests of all learners, because there was no such past. This book breaks new ground and builds on Stephen Ball’s previous work on education policy. It should appeal to those researching and studying in the fields of social policy, policy analysis, sociology of education, education research and social economics.

Product Description:
This is the introduction to PLCs for which baffled students, technicians and managers have been waiting. In this straightforward, easy-to-read guide, Bill Bolton has kept the jargon to a minimum, considered all the programming methods in the standard IEC 1131-3 - in particular ladder programming, and presented the subject in a way that is not device specific to ensure maximum applicability to courses in electronics and control systems.
Now in its fourth edition, this best-selling text has been expanded with increased coverage of industrial systems and PLCs and more consideration has been given to IEC 1131-3 and all the programming methods in the standard. The new edition brings the book fully up to date with the current developments in PLCs, describing new and important applications such as PLC use in communications (e.g. Ethernet - an extremely popular system), and safety - in particular proprietary emergency stop relays (now appearing in practically every PLC based system).
The coverage of commonly used PLCs has been increased, including the ever popular Allen Bradley PLCs, making this book an essential source of information both for professionals wishing to update their knowledge, as well as students who require a straight forward introduction to this area of control engineering.
Having read this book, readers will be able to:
* Identify the main design characteristics and internal architecture of PLCs
* Describe and identify the characteristics of commonly used input and output devices
* Explain the processing of inputs and outputs of PLCs
* Describe communication links involved with control systems
* Develop ladder programs for the logic functions AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOT and XOR
* Develop functional block, instruction list, structured text and sequential function chart programs
* Develop programs using internal relays, timers, counters, shift registers, sequencers and data handling
* Identify safety issues with PLC systems
* Identify methods used for fault diagnosis, testing and debugging programs
Fully matched to the requirements of BTEC Higher Nationals, students are able to check their learning and understanding as they work through the text using the Problems section at the end of each chapter. Complete answers are provided in the back of the book.
* Thoroughly practical introduction to PLC use and application - not device specific, ensuring relevance to a wide range of courses
* New edition expanded with increased coverage of IEC 1131-3, industrial control scenarios and communications - an important aspect of PLC use
* Problems included at the end of each chapter, with a complete set of answers given at the back of the book

Summary: Some very good, some bad
Rating: 2
I bought this book to help bring me up to speed on PLCs. I have several years working in electronics and other engineering disciplines, but almost no system control experience.
I did learn a few things from this book and it was helpful. However, there are some serious mistakes in the book. There are several details that are simply wrong, which makes this book a poor choice for people with little to no prior knowledge in the field.
Summary: A succinct but comprehensive introduction to PLCs
Rating: 5
Bolton does a great job with an intro to PLCs. The book is great for a comprehensive introduction to PLCs. I needed inexpensive, yet solid course material, for an adult ed course. This book has been perfect for providing easy to digest material for folks who need familiarity with PLCs.
Summary: Good Book with many mistakes
Rating: 4
This is a great book for beginning PLC programmers, but there are numerouse errors throughout the book which cause confusion when trying to understand the use of Internal Relays, Timers and Counters. Use caution and refer back to the text when completing the tests at the end of each section and when reading about how some ladder logic is functioning, I noticed miss-labled Inputs.
Summary: Do not buy this book if youre programming STL
Rating: 2
I did not get any benefits of this book, sadly.
It is useless with Siemens S7 and you want to learn the STL language.
To few examples with this language.
Sorry
Summary: Very good for getting your feet wet with plc's
Rating: 4
This is a very good introduction for those who have no personal experience with plc's. It does not focus on one brand, but introduces the reader to various manufacturers and the way each functions in comparison to each other. It is great for understanding the capabilities of PLC's. Further information is needed to learn to program and design with plc's.

Summary: Excellent Book For Beginner
Rating: 5
I am using this book in my PLC class. I found that it gives me very very clear explanation on many general PLC topics. It really helps me to build up the solid foundation for PLC programming. It will help you a lot if you want to be a PLC programmer in the future. Trust me! This is the best PLC book I found, at least for beginner like me.
Summary: Numerous mistakes throughout text
Rating: 1
When using this text, I found many mistakes in the text, especially the figures. If you are interested in Chapter 14, beware. There are several errors in the explanation of second-order responses.
Summary: Not too helpful
Rating: 1
I spent the last two weeks looking at this book trying to figure out just what it's going to teach me. Unfortunately, the material covered in this book isn't for someone who already knows something about PLCs. I bought this book thinking that it would be handy as a reference guide, for the little things I forget sometimes. But this book is so basic. It's defintely a beginners book
Summary: Too generic!
Rating: 2
I bought this book looking for information on how to best use our controllers here at the plant, and this book just didn't help me out much at all. I wouldn't trust all of those good reviews if you're looking for specific information.
Summary: The Best PLC reference Book
Rating: 5
Outstands from all other PLC books. Explains, illustrates, and guides the reader through real life (not just theory) PLC situations that you may encounter in the industry. Its a great addition to the PLC manufacturers manual.

Summary: For managers - yes this is good
Rating: 5
I agree with the previous reviewer. This a book for managers and would be a great help for descision makers in deciding how best to use PLC technology.
This is not a techincal book per-se but I think should be in every system integrators library.
I have found this to be great help as reference when talking to prsoective customers on best to implement an automation project. This is most serious weakness of most managers in the engineering world.
Very good.
5 stars - highly recommended
Summary: The PLC book for Automation Managers/Engineers
Rating: 5
Most books dealing with PLC's are intended for technicians who would like to know more about the subject. This book is different. The author not only explains how to use a PLC, but he also shows why the PLC still plays a crucial role in most automated processes. Other PLC related subjects like communication, HMI and safety aspects are clearly described without loosing the basic subject. By comparing different PLC types, this book will also attract Automation Managers/Engineers who are considering a PLC in their automation concept.
